AMY ARROWSMITH

Placement
Learning and experimentation have been fundamental elements throughout my degree, my experience working with material lead processes and my interest in objects and visual arts, enabling me to transfer my pre-existing skills to the hands on placement environment at Flameworks Creative Industry.
I have really appreciated the artist lead environment, experimenting and manipulating materials such as glass, steel, plaster and clay. My placement has developed my confidence in working with materials and skilled processes, some of which I now wish to pursue in the future. I now feel able to experiment with new materials within my art practice, as well as improving my knowledge of medias and providing me with information about applying for grants and selling work in galleries.
Flameworks has, however, educated me as to the restraints of working commercially to fund artist studios and materials alongside maintaining a strong consistent artist practice. Over a series of weeks, I spent time with artists, learning their practice and experiencing the way they create work. Learning lampwork techniques creating glass beads, creating plaster moulds and glass positives, blacksmithing, using pottery and glazing techniques. This helped me develop material skills in a practical colloquial environment whilst being influenced by the community of artists.
